It's Project Fair Time!

The Linwood School Project Fair is just around the corner and we are beginning to make the important preparations needed to ensure it is a success.  At this point, students should be deciding if they are going to be participating in the Project Fair, and if they will be working independently or with a partner.  Once these decisions have been made, they can begin exploring topics for their projects.

We, as a staff, are aware of the time commitment involved in students completing their projects at home.  Every home is a busy home, therefore, there will be work sessions provided where students will be able to work on their projects at school during the lunch hour.  During this time, the supervising teacher is not there to work one on one with students, they are there to simply offer a workspace where students can have time to complete projects if they wish.  Also note that students are responsible for bringing their own supplies to these work sessions.  Teachers will not provide materials or resources, other than the use of the iPads, to students.  Students should come to these sessions prepared and willing to work.

If your child is interested in participating in the Project Fair please fill out the form (available from homeroom teacher) and return before February 8th.
The information booklet is available online here .

Review and Rate for Grade 5 Students

Today all grade 5 students participated in the provincial Review and Rate Anti-Tobacco program. The children viewed 12 impactful commercials from around the world with an anti-tobacco theme. The students then voted to indicate which ad they felt was most powerful to prevent people from starting to use tobacco or to encourage users to stop. This year, an ad about e-cigarettes or "vapes" was included as well. Hopefully you can find time to discuss your wishes and beliefs about tobacco use with your child as a timely follow-up to this learning experience.

Giving Tree Club Helps Siloam Mission

Giving Tree is asking for your help to collect items for Siloam Mission!

We learned about how Siloam Mission helps people who are homeless through a presentation by Mr. Janzen, who works at the mission.

In order to help, each classroom is collecting a specific type of needed item to donate to Siloam Mission.

Please, check the photo attached to find out which item your class is collecting and bring the items to your homeroom teacher.

Collection starts on Monday, January 18th and goes until the end of January.

We hope you can help make a difference!

Deer Lodge CC Family Fun Day

Cold Weather Reminders

A healthy mind and healthy body go hand-in-hand. Outdoor recess is a time to connect with friends and recharge through exercise. In this light, all students are expected to go outside for recess.

Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather everyday as conditions often change throughout the day.  Many families also choose to send extra socks and/or mittens in their child's backpack for extra comfort when outdoor gear ends up wet.

We do not have indoor supervision for students during recess. Indoor recess is only permitted in exceptional circumstances. Generally speaking, a child who is too sick to go outside at recess is too sick to benefit from attending school.

During severe weather conditions, as outlined by division policy, all students will be supervised indoors. When the wind chill hazard is at or colder than -29 degrees students will not be permitted outdoors.  When the wind chill hazard is between -25 degrees and -28 degrees students may go outdoors for a shorter outdoor recess, up to 10 minutes.  We call this shorter recess a "fresh air break".  Weather conditions are determined using the report from Environment Canada at The Forks.

These same temperature guidelines apply to our school safety patrols being on duty.  When the wind chill hazard is at or colder than -29 degrees the patrols will not be outside.

Giving Tree Club

The Giving Tree Club had a special guest speaker at today's meeting. JJ from Siloam Mission taught the students how we are all seeds of change and can help our world grow and blossom like a garden with our kind acts. He explained the three levels of support at Siloam Mission: Emergency, Transitional and the Madison in Wolsely housing project.  We learned that Siloam Mission provides three meals daily to 500 people which was 1500 meals each day!  Clothing, toiletries, blankets, health care and job support are some of the additional services provided to people in need.  Giving Tree members will meet again this month (date TBA) to create a plan of how Linwood students and families can assist the great work at Siloam Mission. We look forward to and appreciate your support!
