Winter Concert News

Linwood School has been “abuzz” with Winter concert preparations, and we are all looking forward to the show which is taking place Thursday, December 10.  Our performance this year will feature a selection of poetry and festive songs.  This bulletin will outline important details, and hopefully answer any questions you may have about the concert evening.

 LOCATION/PARKING

We are performing at St. James Collegiate, located at 1900 Portage Avenue.  There will be signs at the Ferry Road entrance to direct families as to where to drop off their children at performance time.  Some parking is available in the GWMS and SJC lots. We encourage families to carpool.

 ARRIVAL TIME/  WARM UP ROOMS
Supervision will be provided in designated warm-up rooms, beginning at 6:10 p.m.  Parents may drop their children off at this time.  The  concert will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m.  When you arrive at the school there will be signs to direct students to their warm up areas.

 CONCERT DRESS
All students are invited to wear their holiday best. Suggested props/costume items are listed below but are not manditory.  Please do not go out and buy these special for the concert.

Kindergarten:           Sunglasses
Rooms 1 & 8:           Kitchen apron
Rooms 4, 6 & 10:     Will be provided
Rooms 15, 16 & 18:  Scarves, mitts, toques

All students must wear their shoes on stage, as boots are not allowed.

CONCERT PERFORMANCES
Students will sit with their class groups, supervised by staff and enjoy the concert. At the end of the concert, parents may pick up their children at their original drop-off location.

We respectfully ask that all siblings (younger and older) be supervised and remain in the gym.  We thank you for your assistance with this matter.

CHOIR

Upon arrival at St. James Collegiate, choir will assemble in Room A with Ms. Versteeg.

Lost & Found

There are many items currently in our lost and found.  Teachers will continue to remind students to take a look for anything that may belong to them.  Parents are encouraged to check the lost and found during conferences; sometimes adult eyes notice things that children's eyes do not!  All items remaining will be donated to a local charity.

Celebration of Learning!

On Thursday, November 26th we will be having our triad conferences. The purpose of these conferences, led by the student, is to share what is happening in the classroom and to give students the opportunity to demonstrate, reflect on, and celebrate their own individual growth. Students will be prepared to showcase their learning from term one.

We are going to once again use an “Open House” format, meaning no need to schedule a time to come visit.  Classrooms will be open on Thursday evening from 4:30pm – 7:30 pm and teachers will be available to visit with students and families during this celebratory time. Please plan to spend approximately 15 minute per classroom.  The open house will end at 7:30.

Mrs. Rogala will be available in the gym office to discuss skills worked on this term in physical education and Ms. Versteeg invites students and parents to visit the music room to meet our new music specialist.

As the focus is on celebrating learning, and due to the fact that there will be multiple families together in the classroom, this is not the ideal time to discuss any concerns you may have about your child.

If you would like to arrange to speak privately with your child’s classroom teacher please contact him/her directly or schedule an appointment for Friday, November 27th during the morning from 9:30-11:00 using the “Linwood Conference Manager” online at http://linwood.sjsd.net/.  The system will open for bookings on Wednesday, November 18th at 8:30 AM.

If you have any questions about our triad conferences, please call the school at 204-889-9356.

We look forward to seeing everyone!

Hoop Dancing At Linwood

This week we have been fortunate to host a residency where we learn the traditional art of Hoop Dancing.  Professionals from the Aboriginal School of Dance have been at Linwood all week and each classroom has had a turn to participate.  We have learned the meaning of the different hoops and that when we dance, we are being the best version of ourselves.  Please enjoy some photos!

Take Your Kid to Work Day

Today was "Take Your Kid to Work" day for Grade 9 students across Manitoba.  We were lucky enough to have two students come to Linwood.

The first student is Noah, a former Linwood student. Noah went to work today with his dad at HP Builders.  This company has very generously donated labour and materials to install our new Buddy Bench, purchased by Parent Council.  Watch for more information regarding a ribbon cutting ceremony coming soon.  Big thanks to HP Builders for the generous donation and to Noah and his dad for spending their day contributing to our school community!

The second student who came today is Maggie, who is Mrs. du Plessis' cousin.  Maggie spent her day experiencing the primary classroom by working in Room 10.  The students all agree, she could have a great future as a teacher!  Thanks for joining us today, Maggie.

Building the frame for the pad.

Pouring the pad for the bench.

Enjoying a book together.

Hugs are the best way to end the day!

Emergency Drills

During the course of a school year, we are mandated to practice 10 fire drills, 2 lockdown drills and 1 tornado drill to prepare our students in the event there is an emergency. Staff will have reviewed procedures with children before emergency measures practices take place. We will only notify home in the event of a real crisis. We will be holding our first lockdown drill in the month of November. Please do not hesitate to call the school if you need any clarification.
